I recently received an invitation to my 20th class reunion. Has it really been 20 years! This invitation came with mixed emotions. Do I really care to go? It may be fun, but why bother?
Ten years ago I was part of the committee. It was very exciting. I couldn't way to see the people I hadn't seen in so long, to find out all about what their lives were like. But now I can't help but think, why go? I can see everyone on Facebook. I mean really, why do most people go to their reunions? Curiosity. We can't help but wonder if Miss Popular is fat now, if the geek is gorgeous, who made something of themselves, how many kids they have? We can get all the information we want right on Facebook. It's like being a fly on the wall at your own class reunion. The curiosity factor is gone.
I am still not sure if I will be attending my reunion. Right now I am enjoying being the fly on the wall. Do you think social medial will change our traditional class reunions?

I've got most my friends from grade school, high school and college on my facebook. Ya know what? I hardly interact with any of them. Frankly, I can't imagine going out of my way to be locked in a hotel conference room of old high school gymnasium with them.
Stopping by from the Lady Bloggers Tea Party. Hi. :)
I think I might have gone to my last reunion (an 11 year reunion - who does that?) if I hadn't discovered facebook. It reminded me how glad I was to graduate.
I think it could have an opposite effect if you connected with the people again and got really excited about seeing them. That's just not the way it worked in my case.
Very interesting...I think that social media has changed everything. For example, I work in direct sales - as well as my full time corporate job. There is a reliance on instant messaging, e-mails, skype, video conferences etc. and meetings - face to face as well as telephone calls are becoming such a rarity that it's actually now something special in quite the same way that an actual card is. I like social media - but I also like to keep old school alive and well. I say go - there's no dancing in social media baby!
There's nothing like going to a reunion and seeing people in person. No one EVER looks like their pictures!
I was thinking about this recently, too. I went to my 20th (7 years ago), and it was fun to see everyone, but I joined Facebook last year, and it's like you said...now I'm keeping in touch with anyone I would want to keep in touch with. Though, it would still be fun to hang out with my old friends.
