My ten year old wants UGGs

My daughter will be ten soon and guess what she wants for her birthday.  UGGs!  Now before she started on this obsession I had really no idea what UGGs were.  I knew they were some sort of boot that people wore but had no idea how popular they were.  I will admit, I am not a "brand-name person".  I am perfectly happy with my FUGGs (as people call them) from Target.  To me they look the same, other than that fancy old sticker on the back.  I have tried to explain to my daughter that I was never a brand-name person and she shouldn't be either.  I explained there is no need for something just because of the name.  I remember back when Swatches were popular when I was a kid.  I so wanted one of these watches, but found one that looked pretty much the same (without the name) and was perfectly happy.  I do not want my daughter growing up to expect these types of things.  I want her to grow up happy with what she has and not always want what others have.  I think people in general are much more happy this way.  Not to mention they are $120 and her feet will be two sizes bigger next winter!  Do you think a ten year old should get new UGGs?

wow this is a tough one. I don't do much with brand names unless my mom buys it for me (she has more money than me and good taste lol) maybe she could earn the money to pay for half then she would realy appreciate them?

Yikes. I dread this conversation with my daughter who is only 6.5 yrs old. I, too, can remember wanting Eastlands but my parents never had the money to buy me the brand. Of course, I'm older and could careless about brands as wel. I cringe seeing these young girls in shoes they will outgrow so quickly. But of course, we can afford the luxury items for our children if needed. It's a toughie that we haven't had to face yet. I would hope that 10 yr olds aren't that tough on non-brand wearers yet. In HS, at least they don't outgrow things as quick. Good luck on this one...I wonder when my DD won't want to wear all the cute skirts I make her?

That is a tough one. I agree with Lacie, she could earn the money to pay for half?

My daughter is 10 and wanted them super bad. "No" was the answer and she got knock offs. Plus I read that Uggs are bad for the feet so I only let her wear the knock offs on occasion.

She asked if she saved her money and the answer was still "No"!

This is hard. My children are still too little to be brand aware but I know they will be eventually. I agree with what you say they should be happy with functional rather than branded, but sadly that's life. Maybe you could compromise and let her have one thing that's branded? Or as Lacie says she could earn the money for them then she's learning the true value as well. I found you via SITS by the way, LOVE the name of your blog x

I have a pair of uggs and I have to say I would never buy a pair again! They are not functional. If you do not spray them with sealer consitenly they will leak and when they do it sucks! So they are for style only. I do like them for that reason. And if my girls want them (or something like them) when they get older I probaly will get them but only because I am a sucker like that. But I would make sure they work for them like with chores and what not. Good luck!

I think my kid will have to pay for that kind of stuff herself. Plus I kind of mandate how much of her money gets spent and what goes in her savings account. Gives her less spending money. I'm sure this will be tougher when she's older, but if she want's a name brand whatever, it will be her that pays the price.
