When I was a kid baking was a regular activity. We would get out the big mixing bowl and take turns pouring in the ingredients. Mixing it was always fun, especially if we got to use the electric mixer. Then, the best part was licking the bowl. No, I don't mean we actually "licked" the bowl. Licking the bowl was when using our fingers to eat all that scrumptious batter that was left over. One of us would get the bowl and the other the mixers. My favorite was the vanilla cake batter.
Now fast forward to today. Letting the kids crack the eggs, not happening. As soon as they are done mixing, go wash your hands! And, they can completely forget about licking that bowl! I am a complete freak about salmonella. Why was this not an issue when we were growing up? I must have ate a trillion raw eggs in my years and never once got sick. I will admit when my kids turn their backs, I am eating the batter! How bad is that! And, what is worse is that any other time I am using an egg to make something other than batter, I immediately wash my hands. Gotta get that egg off my hands, never mind the fact that yesterday I put it in my mouth!
Do you let your kids lick the bowl?

Hi! I came to pay you a visit! You have a great layout! And yes, I let my kids lick the bowl...:) We (mums) do our own decisions, always wanting the best for our kids
Yes I let my kiddos lick the bowl. I know it is gross but they love it and beg and beg till I give in.
I do in fact let them lick the bowl... I try to limit the amount, but it was one of my very favorite things to do as a kid. And I still do it, too. Thanks so much for checking me out! I look forward to seeing you more and will be following you too.

Hi!! Following you back:)
Yes, I let my kids the bowl and the spoon. There's usually not much left on them but it's a treat they enjoy.
We've never had any problems from it, just as I never did when I was a kid. I think if we didn't get sick when we were kids, when regulations were less strict, then the chances are even slimmer now.
Thanks for stopping by! I look forward to reading your blog.
Well, I just made my birthday cake with my daughter and no, I didn't let her lick the cake bowl but later when we mixed the icing--we both went to town! LOL! I posted it on my blog on Jan. 11--my Fun Day Monday spot!
And yes, I do remember licking quite a few bowls as a kid!
Following you from MBC!
Well, my dad worked for the public health department, and he was always making sure we were careful about things like salmonella. And...
We ALWAYS liked the bowl!
I have always let my kids lick the bowl as well. So far, so good. (They've made it to ages 15 and 18.) ;o) Ha, ha!
I let them lick the bowl, the mixers, and spatula. Isn't that horrible! I haven't had anyone sick yet. Of course, I grew up on raw batter myself and who doesn't eat cookie dough?
Licking the bowl is the only way to enjoy cooking a cake, brownies, etc. What would it have been like watching my mother stir and stir, and my mouth watering for this batter, then she dumps it into the sink. Oh my goodness, the empty feeling, I still can feel it! Let the kids lick the bowl!!
Licking the bowl is okay (in our house) eating spoonfuls of raw dough, not so much ;)
Hi Dalia, I am following your blog, now I know what generation X means. I recently had to attend a day long food hygiene course for my work and after that I do the same as you. I also agree that I was always allowed to lick the bowl and never got ill but now I don't like to take the risk and I've taught them to wash their hands after they touch eggs. For some reason I am down as Drue not Violetstone.
HI, thanks for following me. I am now following you too. I love your posts, I will be coming back!!!
You know I read that the real problem with eggs is not the egg itself but the bacteria on the outside of the shell. If you buy organic eggs and wash the shells thoroughly, salmonella should not be a real problem. Now, please don't change your habits based on me, I don't want you to get salmonella poisoning but, in answer to your questions, we do lick the bowl in our house. I can't help it. It just tastes goo.
Growing up we always licked the bowl. I am very surprised to hear that most of us still do. Its torture not to - maybe I will have to rethink this since most are. Talk about peer pressure;-)
My kids crack the eggs, mix, and drop cookies once all done they are rewarded by - YES licking the bowls.
I am not a helicopter parent nor free range I just sit happily in the middle :) enjoying life while balancing quality of life against 'risk' :)
tried to find a way to contact you (no contact page) so I am going to tweet an invite to you ....
Funny timing. I just made a cake with my daughter this morning. She cracked the eggs (all over her hands), and licked the bowl. She will probably eat a trillion raw eggs in her lifetime!
They stare at you when you are cooking, and it's wonderful to know they are interested in something other than electronics, and heck, everyone licks a bowl.
Too many people listen to all the studies, and jump at the fact, everyone is right. I think, after so many years of licking bowls, it's perfectly fine. I must be hard for those children with allergies to eggs, etc. But today, you can make anything to suit those kids. Great blog Dilia, and I will be searching for more.
