Remember those cupcakes you were so excited to bring to school on your birthday? Remember how much fun it was to bring those to school and share them with all your friends? Now think about that day and imagine bringing in pencils. Yes, PENCILS! My kid's school has a new rule not allowing any kind of sweets in their school. This isn't just birthdays, it includes holiday parties too. Forget about candy on Halloween, it's all about the pencils! I even have to be careful when packing their lunches. Apparently there are "lunch box police" roaming the cafeteria!
This whole thing came about because of the battle with childhood obesity. I am glad they are trying to do something about the problem, but really, go about it in the right way. I do not think that prohibiting our kids to bring cupcakes on their birthday to school is the right way. I mean any expert would tell you that it is not just about the sugar. Sure, a lot of sugar is not good for you, but what about all the other junk kids are eating, and not to mention the lack of exercise a lot of them are getting. Not to mention, they won't let them bring in cupcakes once a year, but continue to feed them those things they call lunches in the cafeteria, go figure. Can your child bring cupcakes to school?

I just started following and love your blog. I think it's crap to tell kids to celebrate with pencils! Seriously! I agree that todays kids are overweight, but it's not happening at school! If I wanna feed my kid a cupcake, I'm gonna feed him a cupcake! LOL.
Hi Dalia! Following from MBC/FFF Club!! :)
I love me some cupcakes and see nothing wrong with school's allowing kids to celebrate their bday or special occasions with a special treat! But then again, it would probably be somebody's birthday EVERDAY, lol. Maybe they could allow it at least once a month to celebrate January Bdays, and so on?? My little man is only 2 1/2 so we're not there yet!

My kiddo was told she wasn't allowed to eat candy that I put in her preschool lunch. Talk about learning to fight against "the man" I told her that if mommy puts it in your lunch, it's okay for you to eat it no matter what teacher says.
What???? No cupcakes! That stinks! I though you were going to say it was because of food allergies. But because of obesity? Interesting.
Stopping by from SITS. Have a great day!
My children's school bought in the same rule a few years ago. I can sort of see the point if kids are getting too many sweets. In my kids school it was traditional to bring in a box of chocolates to share out, or lollypops. They seem to have laxed the rules recently so I guess it was just too unpopular. My youngest who is the only one left at primary school has her birthday in the holidays so misses out anyway.
Hi Dalia! I agree. I think the cupcake policy sounds insane. A friend of mine whose son is in Kindergarten told me that in his lunch line they can choose to eat anything they want, getting chips, cookies, soda, etc. every day. Not to mention the lunches themselves are not the epitome of health. I think this is the real problem. Not an occasional birthday treat. Great post!!!
Yes at least I hope so since I just sent her in with 24 cupcakes for her 5th birthday today!!
LOL about "no cupcakes" but feed them that crud in the school lunches!! Our school got REALLY SUPER strict about cupcakes for birthdays! They even went as far as not allowing ANY home made items. Everything had to be bought and in sealed wrapping! The principal who enforced these fun rules is gone now! WOO HOO! Some teacher still prefer "pencils". Most are okay with "cupcakes". Nice blog! I stopped by to follow from Community of Mom ;) I'll be back xoxo
Go For Cupcakes! Kids are little for such a short time, let them enjoy what little means! And Lunch Box Cops. I mean, where does mommy fit in? I can see a little one opening the lid of their favorite lunch box, fearful a big old person is going to take their food!
