Remember spin the bottle and truth or dare? Well, hold onto your seats because guess what kids are playing today. It is called "Rainbow Party". Until recently I never heard of "rainbow parties". My first thought was "Oh my god, are you serious?". If you have never heard of a rainbow party before (as I didn't) let me fill you in. These are oral sex parties in which each girl wears a different shade of lipstick and each boy attempts to collect each shade. There is competition on how many shades each boy can get. Now, before you think "this isn't happening in my kid's school", guess what, it probably is. It is happening everywhere...private schools, suburbs, cities, and everywhere else.
Kids do not realize the risk of oral sex. They think they are not at risk because they are not having unprotected intercourse. They do not think of oral sex as sex and feel as if it is keeping their virginity. The risks are real. HPV can be passed through both oral and genital contact, and according to the American Cancer Society 39 percent of oral cancers are related to HPV. Besides the physical risk these kids are taking, there is also the emotional aspect. Teens explain how there is pressure going on for girls to perform oral sex as a way of keeping a boy's interest.
I think a lot of parents are embarrassed to talk about issues such as oral sex with their kids, especially at such a young age (myself included). But, we have to realize that this is real. It is about more than "sex" in general and using protection. We have to keep up on all of the games and trends going on in our kid's lives. We have to teach them right from wrong, confidence, and how to say no. We have to be real with our kids.
Have you ever heard of Rainbow Parties? Do you know of any other games or trends that are popular amongst teens today?

WTH? I have never heard of this before! I have two teen sisters... it makes me wonder... Oh gawd!
I read about this in one of Jodi Picoult's books. Chills. Again, making me want to move to the country and a 500 acre farm, Footloose notwithstanding!
I heard about this a few years ago. It's very heartbreaking how insecure girls have become. These boys have become so desensitized that they see nothing wrong with treating girls as objects.
Many teens view anal sex the same way. Basically, as long as there isn't any vaginal penetration they think they're still virgins.
Congrats on being featured
Yes, I have heard of it. I spoke of it to my teenager last fall when she entered high school and had to ride the bus for the first time (we are a walkers until high school). She was grossed out.
So...you know what is worse than reading it, was listening to them talk about it.
Visiting from LBS...love your blog.
Now down to business ... Yes, I know about "rainbow parties", also known as "pharma parties". I work in a Pharma company and we try to spread the word amongst our employees, send home info so that they can distribute... this is a serious issue and a deadly one. We need to warn our kids.
Oh geez, no, haven't heard about this. I remember a few years ago when boys were wearing colored plastic (similar to jelly) bracelets supposedly one each for their sexual partners but this really too much. Besides the risk of STD's I wonder what all this is doing to the phyche of these young girls.
OMG I think I'm going to be sick. This is the most horrible thing I've heard all week. Thank you for informing me though. It's wierd to think of myself being the out of touch parent already, but I guess I am.
I think this is a myth or urban legend. I remember hearing about these 15 years ago when I was in high school - it isn't a new urban legend. Maybe it is akin to snuff films - everyone is convinced they are real, but they are also an urban legend. Not sure if it comforting to know there were rumors about this 15 years ago - but I'm not sure these parties are happening.
Stopping by from SITS
Just saw you were the featured blogger on Lady Bloggers - yay you!
This is disgusting! How do these kids come up with stuff?!?!?
Welcoming you to SITS!
I was relieved when I asked my 16 year old if she had heard of rainbow parties and she looked completed confused for a minute and asked what it was.(She thought maybe it had something to do with being gay) After reading she said, Oh yeah, she had heard of kids doing that. I had heard that many teens don't seem to think oral sex is real sex. It does seem that this most informed generation is still taking risks and the lack of self respect is awful.
Ahhhh!!! I have heard about these. I cannot believe it. What is the world coming to?!?

This is so frightening. I want to lock my kids up when they get to be teenagers. Not that that would be a good solution, but still!
Stopping in to welcome you to SITS!
I've never heard of that one. I did hear a while back that they were doing something with those colored jelly bracelets. They come up with a new thing even before we've figured out the old one.
Ugh. I have heard of this, but always filed it away in the "when my kids are older" pile. Unfortunately, the when is now. Is there a swath of sand somewhere I can bury my head in?
This is just so scary!
I'm stopping by to welcome you the the SITS family!
OMG! I've never heard this before and it horrifies me that teens are engaging in this.
I've heard about this before. I was shocked. It hasn't really been that long since I've been high school (I'm 30).
Welcome to SITS~
I had not heard of these parties. But I am fierce about reminding my 14-year old that oral sex is still sex. And more importantly, reasons why she should wait.
Stopping by to say welcome to the SITS community!
Umm, never heard about this one before. But then again, I wasn't invited to parties much as a kid.
But Rainbow Parties? That's just disgusting.
