A pill for everything - why?

Does it seem that everyone takes a pill for something these days?  Have a headache?  Take a pill.  A rash?  Take a pill.  Sore muscle?  Take a pill.  Tired?  Take a pill.  Overwhelmed?  Take a pill.  The list goes on and on.  Why do people these days feel the need to take a pill for every ache and pain they have?  What do they think people did before these medications were around?  Why are doctors so easy to prescribe a pill for everything?  Is it an easy way out?  Are they getting paid from the drug companies to prescribe them?

Why are people not able to cope with an ache or a pain?  Or, simply being tired?  Do they realize that these drugs come with side effects, some even long-term that we don't even know about?

We have already seen it with antibiotics, too many doctors prescribing antibiotics when not necessary causing a resistance.

What happens down the road when they realize that too many people are taking coping medications or pain medications?

Do you think doctors should be so easy to prescribe pills to patients or should there be more scrutiny as to whether or not it is really necessary?  Do you think people are unable to cope the way they used to now that they know there is a quick way to fix it?

Our bodies are not eating real, picked, grown foods. The longer an items is off it's root it is daily losing nutrients- what we get often is near zero it's is supposed benefits, plus all the processed foods we eat cause our body to have deficiencies. Each person manifests them differently. Some gain weight (uh, that would be me), some have headaches, some are prone to acid reflux or fatigue; we pop a pill that can temporarily help but we ultimately are not deficient in that pill. I am not sure if we can 100% fix things since each generation things get more 'away' from rural and real but fix the food and usually fix the issue. Now if I could just heed my own/my hubby's advice :)-
I also agree there should be some policing to doc's scripts, more so for their patient's needs and to help them organize folks that could be over medicating or abusing drugs, but they do what they can do-

There definitely needs to be more scrutiny. I had a mind numbing headache last week and I NEVER get headaches. Ever. So after three days of pain I went to the doctor who promptly wrote me a prescription. One of the side effects of this medication was ... wait for it ... wait for it ... HEADACHES.

Ugh. I went and got a massage and now I feel great.

I do think doctors over prescribe. I think our bodies are growing more and more tolerant to what they are feeding us and I truely belive that the obesity epidemic is linked in with the medicines and the tolerance for it. That said, I am the first one to pop a Tylenol when I get a headache and during allergy season I live on Dayquil.

I hate taking meds. I hate giving them to my kids too and have been on the receiving end of some not so nice comments about that.

Personally - I don't give meds for coughs, sneezes, or runny noses (unless it's allergy based). I have 3 children's meds in the house - Tylenol, Motrin, and Benadryl.

I don't take them to the doctor for every little thing either, but when they go and get a prescription I make sure to finish the meds. I don't want them to have be immune to the anti-biotics when they're adults.

@Chele HA! That is hilarious...

When I watch those commercials I always laugh at the ridiculous side effects. They appeal to we consumers in our most desperate days.

I bet most of the people on these medications don't even need them, but they saw a commercial that made them think they did.

"If you can't sleep through the night, you should take this pill. It'll cause nausea and you should call a doctor immediately if your arm starts wiggling around because that could be a sign of a life-threatening condition."

Booo. I like country remedies: hot water bottles, Vicks salve, goose grease and honey, Goody powder, etc.

My husband is bugging me to take a B-12 injection to cure all that ails me. Apparently the homeopathic medical people think we're all not getting enough B vitamins.

I just think I feel crappy sometimes.

I'm very active and I get tired. Then I sleep.

Maybe we've all become convinced that everyone feels better than we do.

It may sound depressed (do I need a pill?) but I think this might be as good as it gets.

I do not like to take presription meds. I'll take OTC for my chronic pain, but nothing more. It made me loopy.

I take vitamin B12 injections after my endocronologist found that I had almost none. Between that and my newly discovered Synthroid for Hashimoto's Disease, I am now back to the land of the living.

I think that our food is not as natural and pure as it used to be, therefore, our illnesses have increased making taking more medication a necessity.
