Internet Trolls - What is wrong with these people?

This morning on the Today Show they ran a story about internet trolls.  I am not just talking spammers.  These people are the lowest of the lowest.  Utterly repulsive.  They are targeting families of kids who have died.  They use social networking as a way of posting mean terrible things about the kids.  Things like "she was a slut" or "she deserved it".  Some even post pictures of awful accidents in which the kids died.

What kind of person can do this?  The story explained how these people are doing this to get a rise out of people.  My feeling is these people are going to a not so happy place when they die.

Just my two cents this morning.

More on this story from the Today Show here.

I caught the intro to that piece on the Today show. I was completely stunned and confused...why would anyone do such horrible things?

Sickity sick sick. I didn't see it. Did they have any actual trolls on the show? I just can't imagine what kind of person would spend so much time and effort stooping so low.

Disgusting.

That's awful, but it's actually pretty common with celebrities. Even though River Phoenix died almost twenty years ago, I've still seen comments online where people have said things that he deserved what he got and he was asking for it. I know he had his problems, but he could've just as easily been someone's teenager in high school struggling with a drug addiction. And there was that case on Myspace not too long ago where kids and a mom bullied a girl so bad through Myspace messaging she committed suicide. A girl not too long ago that I graduated with died in car accident and there was talk about her on the internet, but that was more of people questioning the content the reporter provided in his/her article than the actual girl. The point is, though, people are free to run their mouths on the Internet and say whatever they want to. Sometimes, that can be a bad thing.

When/if they find the perpetrators of these crimes (for that is what they are) they should lock them up and throw away the key. How awful can you be to enjoy doing something so terrible to someone who is already suffering the worst misery you can inflict upon a person, losing a child.

I saw this, too, and it was the first time I've heard of anything like this. I can not even begin to imagine what kind of person would do this. And why? It reprehensible!

It's disgusting. They are heartless and I would love to meet them in a dark alley someday with an exceedingly tall, muscled bodyguard (or 10). Dirtbags, really.

There are really awful people in the world. I agree that they're probably very hot in the afterlife.

I don't understand why the people do this as there really is no purpose...what are they trying to achieve??? only to upset them even more? and if there is no purpose...then why do it??? Why must we have people like this in the world?

That's terrible! Those poor families. Stopping by from SITS.

Oh, yeah. I should mention, we knew a family where a child died years ago. People sent letters, hate mail, saying similar things. What the heck? Why would you do that? So it's not just an internet thing.

Oh that is so terrible. I'm from New Orleans, and we have A LOT of that on our newspaper's site, www.nola.com. Recently, there was a quadruple murder which left two children, their mother and aunt dead. Trolls decided to post on the story saying that it was the fault of the local government and that it was because of the neighborhood they lived in.

NOLA.com is known more for trolls than anything. It is sad.

I hate trolls!

I mean to comment on this a couple of days ago.

When I restarted the blog I'm presently writing, I had a woman follow me from the blog I'd been writing, *deleted,* and then begin to harass me again on the new blog. It scared me to death--I thought I had to know this person, because the nature of the attack was so personal, and how did she follow me anyway? Scared me to death. I stopped writing for several months.

I have no idea what's wrong with some people. I'll have to catch the Today show piece.
